Florence Wyche Stith, born December 8, 1925 to the late Timothy and Carrie Freeman Wyche, was called home by our Heavenly Father on March 15, 2013. As a long term resident of Jarratt, Virginia, she was engaged in both civic and social activities within Sussex and Greenville Counties. She was the first the woman to serve on the Sussex County School Board, serving two terms, one of which as Chairman. She succeeded her late husband Millard D. Stith, Sr. who was the first African American appointed to the School Board and the first African American to serve as Chairman of the Sussex County School Board. She retired from the Greenville County School System as Cafeteria Manager.
She was a devoted member of Jerusalem Baptist Church and served as Church Clerk for 45 years. She loved Jerusalem and was sincerely loved by her Church family, particularly the youth. She was a Deaconess at Jerusalem and a member of the Eastern Star Jarratt Chapter #185.
She was preceded in death by her husband the late Deacon Millard D. Stith, Sr. and son First Lt. William Henry Stith and is survived by nine (9) children. They are Shirley Stith Ford (Pete) of Portsmouth, VA.; Deacon Millard D. Stith, Jr. of Midlothian, VA; Dr. Melvin Stith (Patricia) of Syracuse, NY; Brenda Stith Finch of Fairfax, VA; Janet Stith Taylor (Harold) of Glen Allen, VA; Rose Stith Singleton (Oliver) of Richmond, VA; Mildred Stith Barden (Joe) of Chesterfield, VA; Francine Stith Jackson (Johnnie) of Fort Washington, MD; and David B. Stith (Lois) of Montclair, NJ.
She is survived by grandchildren Karen Jackson, Tracy Harris, Millard Dallas Stith III, Dr. Melvin Stith Jr., Lori Stith, William Stith, Ronald Finch, Jr., Kimberly Ford, Dr. Gretchen Generett, Grant Givens, Rachel Singleton, Hunt Singleton, Christine Singleton, Nathan Barden, Nicole Barden, Morgan Stith, Matthew Stith, and Courtney Stith. She is survived by great grandchildren Justin Stith, Maya Stith, Sidney Harris, William Generett, Gabrielle Generett, Nia Givens, and Alese Givens.
She is also survived by sisters Ruth Haskins of Richmond, VA, Evelyn Ford of Chesterfield, VA, Christine Ford of Richmond, VA, Ella Mae Powell of Philadelphia, PA, and Louise Tucker of Dinwiddie, VA. She is survived by brothers Warren Wyche of Detroit, MI, Nathaniel Wyche of Baltimore, MD, and James L. Wyche of Palm Coast, FL. She is survived by 6 brothers-in-law and 7 sisters-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 21 at St. John’s Baptist Church at 12464 St. John’s Church Road, Stony Creek, VA 23882. Burial will follow at the Jerusalem Baptist Church Cemetery at 12492 Kientz Road in Jarratt VA 23867. Remains may be viewed at the Pearson Funeral Home at 556 Halifax Street Emporia, VA 23847 and again at St. John’s Baptist Church from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM on March 21. The repast will be held at Jerusalem Baptist Church following the services.
